The Best Things

Many things happened during this particular year of history – can you guess the year from these clues?

  • “December 1963 (Oh What a Night)” by The 4 Seasons, “All By Myself” by Eric Carmen, and “Silly Love Songs” by Wings topped the charts during the year.
  • The average annual income was $16,000.00, the price of a gallon of gasoline was .59 cents, and a brand spanking new Zenith 25” color TV cost $599.00.
  • “Rocky”, “Logan’s Run”, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, and “The Bad News Bears” were top movies at the box office.
  • The Apple computer company was formed and, in the fall, President Ford lost to Jimmy Carter.

While all of these may have been important at the time and stir up many memories, there was one particular event that was far more important – at least to me – that happened that year. I was eight years old at the time and it would be another twenty years before I would fully realize just how important this year was but the Good Lord was hatching a plan and beginning to set the stage for what would become the single most important event in my life – apart from salvation.

At the time I was oblivious to anything that was going on behind the scenes and what stage was being set. I was far too busy waiting for spring in a boring classroom and doing my chores on the farm in the farthest reaches of Upper Michigan. I have always hated this time of year between real winter and the new life of spring. It is cold, wet, icy, gray and gloomy. Plus, what happened that year on this particular day was too far away for me to take notice and, to be honest, until I looked it up this morning I would not have been able to even tell you what day of the week this event happened on, (it was a Thursday), and I have no idea what time of the day it happened. Something did happen on March 11th of that year that would change my life for the better…change my life for the best.

Tomorrow is my wife’s birthday! I would soon be building myself a doghouse if I told you the actual year she was born, but you may be able to figure it out from the clues above if you try. I waited 28 years for the Good Lord to draw back the curtain and see the stage he set! I’d wait another 28 if it meant spending my life with you…

Happy Birthday, Honey…so glad you said ‘yes’. The best things in life really are worth waiting for…
